Why Film

My heart calls out to work with film. I don’t just love photographing families with it, I crave working with it. I have been photographing my family solely on film for years and will never turn back to digital. Analog film photography has a unique and timeless beauty that is hard to replicate with digital photography. Film is magic. Film is slow. Film is presence. Film is art.

Yes, film is much more expensive to work with than digital (Kodak, stop raising prices already!) but I pinky promise it is absolutely worth paying more to have your family photographed on film. Dubious? Let me convince you.

Film forces the photography process to slow down and focus on the moment, and that is a good thing.

With analog film, there is a sense of anticipation and mindfulness that can be lost with digital photography. The need to carefully compose each shot and make every exposure count can force forces me to slow down and focus on the moment, resulting in images that are more thoughtful and deliberate. I am. more present for you, allowing you to be more present for your family, and ultimately more present for yourself. Making the family photo session and experience.

Serendipity, not the sweets shop in New York, the beauty of chance.

Shooting with analog film can be a more unpredictable and spontaneous process than digital photography. Have you read the book “Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert? She talks about the creative process doesn’t just belong to the creator, but is a partnership with the universe. Yeah, that’s a bit “woo woo” but I’m oh so “woo woo” and I fully believe in it. Using film helps hold a space for that creative unknown, which results in magical images. The limited number of exposures and the inability to instantly review images can lead to unexpected and serendipitous results that add to the charm and beauty of the final image.

Film loves light, I love light, you will love light on film... guarenteed.

Analog film has a wider dynamic range than digital sensors. Let me translate that technical mumboo jumboo for you. Film loves light. Full sun will make most digital photographers panic. Photographing on film allows it to capture highlights and shadows in a more natural and subtle way. This can result in images with a greater depth and dimensionality. Meaning a softness to light while still having rich color and tones. Film also adds grain, a unique texture to the image, giving it a character and personality that is difficult to replicate with digital photography.

Photographing families on film isn’t just about a pretty picture, but the ability to help us slow down and focus on the moment. The softened light, the rich colors, the artist process, are all things that I love about film.
